The Observation

With its whole operation based on tracking and moving, it is imperative that SFL be agile, adaptive, and insightful. Given the complexity of identifying vehicle-specific characteristics, it needed a way to enter a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and create shipments in its logistics application, Turvo, while loading the vehicle attributes automatically, as close to real-time as possible.

The Approach

Brand Labs would utilize existing public databases from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but available data is limited. Important information, such as vehicle weight and size, is not available. Thus, the switch to use DataOne, an industry-leading VIN decoder service, maintaining as few touch points as possible.

The Solution

Brand Labs built an integration app, connecting Turvo to DataOne, through both their APIs. This allowed SFL to keep seamlessly building shipments in the Turvo UI. The integration server receives the webhooks sent from Turvo, notifying shipment updates. Then, vehicle data is obtained from Data One and propagated back into the relevant shipments at Turvo, allowing for real-time logistical support for their auto carriers. A monitoring report was also created to notify SFL and Brand Labs if there were problems associated with the VIN decoding process.
