Custom Development

This page is filled with examples of our custom ecommerce development projects, but it’s just a tiny sampling of our capabilities. We can do all sorts of custom programming, even if you’ve been told that it can’t be done. If you have an ecommerce store and a specific development need (even a really tricky one) contact us.

Interactive Parts Finder

Interactive Parts Finder

The Challenge

To allow the end user to easily find specific replacement parts for their espresso machine without requiring the assistance of a customer service representative.

The Solution

Using client-provided schematics, Brand Labs created a parts finder that allowed the end user to find their part simply by navigating to the page associated with their machine. Once there, they need only to roll over the part they’re looking for to reveal a pop-in window with all of the product information. We also added RapidCart (our exclusive soft-add-to-cart-feature) so that once found, the part could easily be added to the consumer’s cart.
The solution is based on the integration of a third party application and the product info is dynamically pulled from Volusion, so if the prices or info change, that change is reflected within the parts finder.

Multiple Variable Search Refinement

Multiple Variable Search Refinement

The Challenge

To allow the end user to refine their product search based on criteria like color, price, size, etc.

The Solution

Through a redesign and functional restructuring of the left navigation, we developed a system by which the consumer can use a single (or multiple) criteria to narrow their choices, allowing for more targeted searches and easier conversion. We also provided a full set of work instructions to allow the client to make any necessary changes that may occur down the line.

Durable (Sticky) Search Refinement : Year, Make & Model

Sticky Search Refinement

The Challenge

The client (an auto parts dealer network) wanted a durable (or “sticky”) search tool for their site – allowing their customers to choose a single year, make and model to narrow their search. Once they’ve done that, the site remembers their choices – ensuring that within each category, the customer would only be shown relevant products. Further, to make each subsequent visit that much easier, the site always remembers their choices, unless the tool is reset by the customer or their cache is emptied.

The Solution

Using Volusion’s built in category structure, Brand Labs created custom code that recognizes category ID pairs in order to assign specific products to the refined search. The use of cookies allows the search to be sticky.
While this tool is an obviously natural fit for year, make and model, it could just as easily be applied to any set of search refinement parameters. For example, gender, size and price for a clothing retailer, or system, genre and new/used for a video game retailer.

Cruise Itinerary / Shore Excursion Cross Reference Tool

Cruise Itinerary

The Challenge

The client (a travel agent specializing in shore excursions for cruise-goers) wanted their customers to be able to choose from a variety of excursion options based on their cruise travel itinerary.

The Solution

Brand Labs began this solution with the integration of a third party application that allows access to cruise schedules. We then created a backend system that allowed the client to match their selection of excursions to the cruise schedule database.
Once the backend portion was completed, we designed and built the UI for the tool, making a previously difficult task easy, increasing the likelihood of conversion. Prior to the creation of this tool, the process of booking a shore excursion was burdensome and could easily force the potential customer to navigate away from the site just to find all of the necessary information. Now, with just some basic information, the customer can be shown a full range of choices based on their schedule.

Category-Specific Store Template

Category-Specific Store Template

The Challenge

In this case, the client sells customized stationery and gifts, each related to a different educational milestone or fraternal organization. Because their products are aimed at such a wide range of consumers, they wanted the look of the store to reflect the sensibilities of each target audience.

The Solution

The client was sure of one thing: they didn’t want to maintain a separate site for each of their demographic targets. This required us to develop a custom solution that allowed the entire store template to change based on the customer’s category choice (while still operating entirely on a single Volusion store). For example, customers searching collegiate products will be met with a site that’s appropriately mature, while those searching for kindergarten-related items will find bright colors and fun graphics.
This particular solution is an excellent example of the type of truly specific (and unexpected) problems that Brand Labs can help Volusion retailers overcome… with style.

Pre-Checkout Upsell Landing Page

Pre-Checkout Upsell Landing Page

The Challenge

What retailer wouldn’t want one last chance to add an item or two to a customer’s order? Well, our Pre-Checkout Upsell Page offers just that opportunity.

The Solution

The client had three specific products that he wanted every single customer to see before he left the site, knowing from experience that simple awareness of these items was often enough to trigger a sale, but the only way to ensure that every customer saw these items was to include them in the checkout process, which is exactly what we did.
Brand Labs designed and developed a Pre-Checkout Upsell Landing Page that pops up between the cart and checkout pages. It’s a low-impact way to draw attention to featured products and can be changed by the client (through the use of the included work instructions).
This page could be coded to be dynamic and pull products based on the customers’ purchases.

Synchro Data

Synchro Data

The Challenge

More and more eMerchants are working with drop-shippers and fulfillment centers, which, on the one hand, can truly streamline their operations, but on the other hand, it can be difficult to keep track of all of that incoming and outgoing data.

The Solution

This particular solution is more like a full menu, including multiple solutions. Synchro-Data does just that – it synchronizes data (including stock levels) between Volusion and the proprietary systems being used by your organization, drop-shippers and third party fulfillment centers.
Each implementation is unique and can send or gather information (or both). From the end user’s perspective, Synchro-Data is invisible, but in the background, it can be configured to take their order through the Volusion store and send it directly to an ERP System, Order Management Software, a fulfillment center or drop-shipper, eliminating the work (and potential for human error) that comes with manual input of order data. Synchro-Data can be an absolute miracle for any merchant, but especially for those requiring a more sophisticated solution.

Bandwidth Reduction

Bandwidth Reduction

The Challenge

As end-users begin to expect more media-rich online shopping, many eMerchants will experience excessive bandwidth use, leading to often unexpected overage charges.

The Solution

There are a wide variety of online store assets that can be stored on an outside server, to be accessed as necessary. With Brand Labs’ Bandwidth Reduction Service, we’ll migrate those assets while ensuring that doing so doesn’t negatively impact any aspect of the store’s operation. We’ll also optimize (and/or) combine JavaScript operations, along with anything else that can be done to reduce the bandwidth required to navigate and utilize the site in question. Further, as with all of our custom development services, we’ll complete quality assurance and browser compatibility testing before completion.

Duty-Free Preorder Functionality

Duty-Free Preorder Functionality

The Challenge

The client needed a way for customers who were eligible for duty-free purchases to preorder products online.

The Solution

This implementation fulfilled a pretty specific need, involving the creation and implementation of data gathering fields for flight number, date, origin, destination, etc. Further, in order to make the entire system within Volusion, we needed to create a system whereby orders would be placed with a null value in the order total (and zero shipping costs). Brand Labs also created a duty-free-specific cart page.
Granted, this isn’t likely to be a common need, but it’s an excellent example of the ways in which we can bend Volusion’s capabilities to meet any client’s unique requirements.

Uniform Builder

Uniform Builder

The Challenge

In this case, the client wanted their customers to be able to add multiple products with a variety of options, all within the same window.

The Solution

Brand Labs created a lightbox pop-in displaying kits (in this case uniform sets). Each item had its own set of options (including quantity – with discounts!) allowing the customer to buy uniforms for an entire team in a single window on a single page AND watch their discount increase as they added items to the order.
Of course, these same principles could be applied to a wide range of products beyond apparel: hobby kits, gift items… the possibilities are limitless and the conversions are easy.

Website White-Labeling

Website White-Labeling

The Challenge

The client for this development project had devoted a lot of resources to having Brand Labs create an industry-leading excursion booking website and they wanted to exploit the result to its fullest by offering their affiliates the opportunity to re-brand the site as their own (for a licensing fee).

The Solution

In order to maintain the consumer confidence related to each brand represented in the affiliate program, Brand Labs needed to ensure that each white-labeled site carried enough of each company’s identity to prevent consumers from balking at having been redirected to a new site (even though, they were, in fact, all being redirected to the same site). To this end, we created a unique header and footer for each affiliate, which took care of the front end concerns. From the backend, we created affiliate-specific links and cookies to allow the client to track activity related to each account and the work instructions we provided will allow them to add new affiliates as necessary.

Zip Code-Based Category Selection

Zip Code-Based Category Selection

The Challenge

In this case, the client maintained several waste storage rental facilities and they wanted customers to have the ability to determine product availability within their area (based on their zip code).

The Solution

In order to make the system work within Volusion, an entire subsystem was designed and programmed to reside within a pop-in lightbox on the main site. Within this box, the customer was able to determine availability based not only on their location, but on the category of product they were hoping to rent. Once the product and availability were determined, the client was redirected to the product page within Volusion and from there the transaction proceeded within the native system.
Again, this is a very specific application of a system that could easily be applied to a wide range of products and services.

Membership Redemption

Membership Redemption

The Challenge

The client for this project was a company that promotes charitable cycling events. Their business model involves three levels of membership, and each of those levels allows for different benefits. All of these benefits needed to be trackable and adjustable.

The Solution

This particular development project was deeply complicated and involved the creation of (and recognition of) vouchers for events based on membership levels. Further, the requirement that the parameters of membership be flexible added another level of complexity. Explaining the solution would be almost as complicated as the solution itself, but suffice it to say that regardless of the membership structure required, it’s likely we’ll be able to create an elegant solution that will serve both the merchant and the client with ease.

Your Project!

Your Project

The Challenge

There are an infinite number of possible custom development needs… at least as many unique needs as there are unique eMerchants.

The Solution

Some of the examples we’ve provided here are applicable to a wide range of needs, while others are so specific that it’s unlikely that they’ll ever be applied in the exact same way again. We hope that what you take away from this mini tour of some of our custom development projects is that we’re fully prepared to address each individual need, no matter how seemingly insurmountable it may be. Our staff is talented, dedicated and tenacious. We hate to lose, so if a solution exists, we’ll find it. Just give us a call. We’ll be happy to help!
